TV Mounting in Jersey City, NJ

Jersey City apartments and homes rarely make TV mounting simple. A waterfront condo in Newport or Exchange Place may have poured concrete walls or steel studs. A brownstone downtown might have thick plaster over brick, or a parlor wall that's exposed brick with soft old mortar. Two-family homes in the Heights and Greenville often have plaster over wood lath, with studs spaced unevenly and old wiring running in odd places. And in many smaller apartments, the only wall that works for the TV is also the one with the radiator, a window or a fireplace. A screen on a dresser takes up room you don't have, and a properly mounted TV frees floor space and puts the picture at the right height.

We start by finding out what the wall is made of and where the structure is, then choose hardware rated for both the wall and the TV. On wood studs, that means lag bolts into the framing. On masonry, sleeve or wedge anchors drilled into solid brick or concrete. On steel studs and plaster, toggle systems rated for the load. We set the height with you, level the mount carefully and hang the TV, and we manage the cables with a neat surface raceway painted to match or by running them inside the wall where it's possible. Soundbars, streaming boxes and a shelf for a cable box can all go in on the same visit, and we clean up dust and packaging before we leave.

What this covers

  • Flat, tilting and full-motion mount installation
  • Mounting on drywall, plaster, brick and concrete
  • Stud, steel stud and masonry anchoring
  • In-wall or surface cable concealment
  • Soundbar and media shelf mounting
  • Over-fireplace and corner installations
  • Removal of an old mount and wall patching
  • Device connection and basic setup
A note from around here: Exposed brick in downtown row houses, concrete and steel-stud walls in Newport and Exchange Place towers, and plaster over lath in the Heights and around McGinley Square are the three wall types we deal with most, and each needs different anchors.

How a TV mounting visit usually goes

Check the Wall

We identify the wall type, locate studs or solid masonry, check for wiring, pipes or conduit, and confirm the height and position with you.

Install the Mount

We fasten the mount with hardware rated for the wall and the TV, and level it precisely before the screen goes up.

Hang and Route Cables

We hang the TV, lock it to the mount and route the cables inside the wall or in a neat painted raceway.

Test and Tidy

We connect your devices, test power and picture, check the mount's movement, and clean up dust and packaging.

Building rules shape a lot of mounting jobs here. Many condo and rental towers in Jersey City require a certificate of insurance before any contractor comes up, limit drilling to weekday hours and ask that work stay out of shared fire-rated walls between units. Renters should check the lease, since some buildings allow mounting as long as holes are patched at move-out. In older row houses and two-families, the challenge is different: plaster can crack if drilled carelessly, studs are often irregular, and chimney breasts may be brick under the plaster. We drill slowly and use the right bits so the wall stays intact around the mount.

What shapes the price in Jersey City

TV mounting cost depends on the size of the screen, the type of mount and the wall. A medium TV on a flat mount into wood studs is straightforward. Masonry and concrete take longer to drill and need different anchors. Full-motion mounts, over-fireplace installs and very large screens take more care and sometimes two people. Running cables inside the wall adds time, and an in-wall power kit adds materials. Taking down an old mount and patching the holes, or mounting a soundbar and shelf at the same time, also affects the total, but bundling several TVs or add-ons into one visit keeps the cost per item down.

Neighbors often ask

Can you mount a TV on concrete in my high-rise?

Yes. Many towers along the waterfront have poured concrete walls or columns where a TV would go. We use a hammer drill and masonry anchors rated for the weight of the TV and mount, and we check for embedded conduit and post-tension cables before drilling, which matters in some concrete buildings. We'll also confirm any building rules on drilling hours, since concrete drilling carries through the structure.

Can you hide the cables inside the wall?

Often, yes. In wood-framed walls with no fire blocking in the way, we can run low-voltage cables inside the wall using a recessed plate behind the TV and another near the outlet below. For power, we use a code-approved in-wall power kit rather than running a plug-in cord through the wall. Brick, concrete and some fire-rated condo walls make in-wall runs impractical, and there we use a slim raceway painted to match the wall so it barely shows.

What height should the TV be?

For most living rooms, the center of the screen should be close to eye level when you're seated, usually lower than people expect. Over a fireplace, a tilting or pull-down mount keeps the angle comfortable. We'll hold the TV up at a couple of heights before drilling so you can see what works from your couch.

I'm renting. Can you patch the holes when I move out?

Yes. When you move, we can take the TV down, remove the mount, fill and finish the anchor holes, and prime or touch up the paint so the wall is ready for your landlord's inspection. Many Jersey City leases allow mounting as long as the wall is returned in good shape, and a clean patch helps protect your deposit.

Can a TV go over my brownstone's fireplace?

Often, yes. Most downtown fireplace surrounds are brick or stone behind plaster, which holds a mount well with masonry anchors. The main questions are heat and viewing height. If the fireplace is decorative or rarely used, heat isn't a concern, and a tilting or pull-down mount fixes the angle. If it's a working fireplace, we check the temperature above the mantel and make sure the TV and cables stay well clear of the flue.
