Handyman in The Heights, Jersey City

The Heights covers the northern end of Jersey City, perched on the Palisades ridge between Hoboken on one side and the Hackensack River marshes on the other, running from Route 139 north to the Union City and North Bergen line. It began as a separate town, Hudson City, incorporated in 1852 and merged into Jersey City after the Civil War, and it still feels like its own place. The housing is mostly two- and three-family frame homes built from the late 1800s into the 1920s, set shoulder to shoulder on narrow lots, many faced over the decades with aluminum or vinyl siding. Along Summit Avenue, Sherman Place and the streets near Pershing Field you find grander Victorian and Edwardian houses with porches, bay windows and turned trim, and on the eastern cliff edge along Palisade and Ogden Avenues stand homes and new condo buildings with views straight across the Hudson to Midtown Manhattan. Plenty of Heights houses are owner-occupied with a rental floor or two, which means one visit often covers both the owner's unit and the tenant's.

Central Avenue is the heart of the neighborhood, a long run of small shops, bakeries and restaurants, with Palisade Avenue and Kennedy Boulevard running parallel on either side. Pershing Field sits in the middle with its ballfields, pool and seasonal ice rink, next to the old Reservoir No. 3, and Washington Park straddles the city line at the north end. On the cliff side, Riverview-Fisk Park looks out over Hoboken toward the Manhattan skyline and hosts a summer farmers market. The Congress Street elevator carries people down the cliff to the 9th Street-Congress Street light rail station, and buses on Central Avenue and Kennedy Boulevard head to Journal Square and Manhattan. The western slope drops toward the Meadowlands, with its own views across the marshes. Because the houses are close together and side yards are narrow, much of our exterior work is done from a ladder in a tight alley or from the front stoop, and we keep that in mind when planning a visit.

What The Heights neighbors book most

The Heights is a short drive up Kennedy Boulevard or Palisade Avenue for us, and we know which blocks have daytime parking and which ones don't, so we're there on time and ready to work.

Jobs we handle a lot around The Heights

The Heights generates a familiar run of jobs. Inside, it's running toilets, dripping faucets and tired supply lines in older bathrooms, doors that won't latch after decades of the frame settling, drywall and plaster cracks along stairwells, and ceiling fans for upstairs bedrooms that get stuffy in July. Outside, it's gutters and leaders packed with leaves, chain-link and wood fences that lean after a few winters, gates that drag across the walk, and stoops and walks that need pressure washing in the spring. Before a new tenant moves in, owners call for a fast make-ready: patching, paint touch-ups, new blinds, fresh caulk in the tub and a check of smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. On the cliff edge along Palisade Avenue, stronger wind makes good exterior caulking and well-fastened storm doors worth the attention.

Questions we hear in The Heights

I own a two-family in the Heights and rent the upstairs. Can you fix things in both units in one trip?

Yes, and that's how most Heights owners use us. We'll take a list for each floor, plan the visit so we're not running up and down the stairs more than needed, and coordinate a time with your tenant if you won't be home. Typical combined lists include a running toilet upstairs, a sticking door downstairs, a dead hallway light, a gutter that overflows over the front stoop and a few patches before a new lease. You get one quote that covers both units.

The gutters on my house overflow every heavy rain. What's usually wrong?

On Heights frame houses it's usually a mix of things. The gutters fill with leaves and seeds from street trees, the leaders that drop down the side of the house clog at the elbows, and older gutters sag between hangers so water pools instead of draining. Sometimes the downspout empties right against the foundation or into a buried drain line that collapsed long ago. We clean everything, flush the leaders, re-pitch sagging sections, add hangers and redirect discharge away from the house so the next storm runs where it should.

My house has old aluminum siding. Can you still repair the trim and gutters?

Yes. Aluminum and vinyl siding are common in the Heights, often installed over the original clapboards decades ago. We work carefully around it, re-fasten loose pieces and trim coil at the gutter line, reseal where flashing has opened up, and replace bent or missing sections where matching material is available. If we find soft wood behind the siding near a gutter or window, we'll show you before going further.
